Raku Firing with José Gouveia

$70.00
Only 8 left in stock

WHEN: Saturday, October 12 (rain date Sunday October 13)
TIME: 10am-4pm
WHERE: North Dam Mill near the brick smoke stack at 2 Main Street (location may change depending on permissions)
EXPERIENCE LEVEL: None required
FEE: $70 per person (sorry, no member discounts for this one)

Our visiting artist, José (with a hard J not an H) Gouveia, is an educator and artist, teaching art and ceramics in Portland to high schoolers and building an impressive body of his own ceramics work. Check out his beautiful work on Instagram or his Etsy Shop.

Instead of signing up for slots, we're going to do a six-hour workshop for up to 12 people. The first two hours will be glazing work and prepping/warming the kilns. We'll have two garbage can kilns operating at the same time. Starting after lunch, we'll begin firing the work. Glazing can continue on site while we are firing the first loads. The first load will take a bit longer but once the kilns are hot, subsequent loads will go faster.

BRING:

  • 3-5 pieces of work (white clay works best, Cone 6-10 clay) to be fired in our raku kilns. Work should not exceed 5” in diameter but can be tall. Work should be relatively sturdy. Thin or fragile pieces may not hold up well in this fairly harsh process.

  • Bisque work: recommend Cone 04-05.

Smaller/medium sized work works best as we can fit more in the kiln and we can tumble the stack to get some really interesting flame pattern. Hand built work fine, but there is a higher risk of breakage if not built well or if pieces are really thick.

  • Bring a fire resistant shirt, gloves, and eye protection if you want to actively work. Wear cotton clothing and closed-toe shoes to protect your skin. A respirator mask is optional if you are sensitive to smoke.

  • We will have two new glazes for you to use, Laguna Raku Tutti Frutti and White Buff (crackle) that José has had great success with. We'll also have Copper Penny. You are welcome to try your own glazes. You can purchase online at places like Blick.

  • Snacks! Water!
